PhD+ Programs in Spring 2023

PhD Plus is excited to announce the following series and workshops to support your academic and professional growth during the Spring 2023 semester. 

Career Design 

Best suited for:  PhD students in year 2 and above, and Postdoctoral Scholars at all stages of training.

This series is best suited for PhD students in year 2 and above. Participants identify their core values and interests, explore diverse careers pathways and practice professional development strategies. Topics include connecting life and career, skills and experiences, building career community, and setting goals to advance career; full participation in the series requires 8-10 hours of time commitment. Upon successful completion (75%) of this session, PhD students are eligible for a non-credit credential (PhDP 9100) in the academic transcript.

*Note: Beginning in the 2023-24 PhD Plus Internship Cycle, students who participate in career design will be given priority when it comes to confirming internship opportunities. 

For PhD students in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, you have two options to engage in Career Design. If your schedule allows, we *strongly* encourage you to enroll in the 1-credit, GHSS 7050 “Professional Life after Graduate School” course to explore topics most relevant with peers from similar fields and training experiences. Register for the course is SIS today!

Business in Society 

Best suited for: PhD students and Postdocs interested in learning more about the industry world and why your PhD sets you up well for the business sector.

Offered by faculty members at the Darden School of Business, you will have access to an introduction to the language of business (applicable to all organizations, including universities) and how to navigate a different environment. Participation in this series will involve prior reading of case studies and book chapters, watching videos, online assessment, and robust discussions throughout the course, leading to a total time commitment of 20-25 hours for the semester. Sample topics include purpose, values, strategic thinking, finance and accounting, leadership, teams, and organizations, negotiation, and storytelling.

Students who participate in 8 out of 10 sessions will be eligible for PhD+ non-credit credential (PhDP 9440) on their academic transcripts.

PhD + Internship Program Information Sessions 

Best suited for: PhD students, 2nd year and above 

PhD Plus provides doctoral students in the advanced years of their degree programs with the opportunity to pursue an internship with a UVA office or external partner. In order to participate, students must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at the University, be in good academic standing, and have completed all degree requirements except for the dissertation. The first will be on Thursday, January 19th from 12-1PM and the second will be on Tuesday, January 31st from 4-5PM. | Registration

Research Communication Series, Level 1  

Best suited for: early career PhD students and Postdoctoral scholars. 

PhD Plus is excited to relaunch the Research Communication professional development series this spring. The four-part (a total of 8 hours) workshop will expose graduate students and postdocs to the fundamentals of communicating their research to a range of audiences. Participants will learn how to craft engaging and clear messages for a variety of audiences, practice presenting their research through different mediums, and learn about tools they can use to clarify their messages. Students who participate in 3 out of 4 sessions will be eligible for PhD+ non-credit credential on their academic transcripts.

Data Literacy in R 

Best suited for: 1st and 2nd year PhD students

PhD Plus Data Literacy in R series meets weekly through lecturing, hands-on exercises, and discussions to help participants become familiar and comfortable in using R for research activities and working with data. Sessions will cover data preparation, visualization, data wrangling, reporting and presenting data in R, and a final project to tie everything together, with a total estimated time commitment of 12-15 hours. Upon successful completion of this series, PhD students are eligible for a non-credit credential (PhDP 9520) in their academic transcript.

Data Literacy: Managing Your Research Data Workshop  

Best suited for: 1st and 2nd year PhD students

As researchers and scholars, we deal with data every day. This 90-minute session led by UVA’s Health Sciences Library will make your life easier by helping you adopt good data practices now. It will be most useful for those who haven’t previously received data management training or need a refresher. 

Using real-life examples of tabular (spreadsheet) data, this interactive workshop will cover: 

  • Recommended approaches to data organization, versioning, documentation, and storage; 

  • “Tidy data” practices to enable efficient data entry, preparation, and analysis; 

  • UVA research data support services and resources.

Praxis Fellowship by Scholars’ Lab: Info Session and Application Deadline 

Best suited for: PhD students, 2nd year and above 

The Praxis Program is a unique and well-known training program in the international digital humanities, offered by the UVa Library’s Scholars’ Lab. This fellowship supports a team of PhD students each year as they explore various aspects of digital humanities together. Under the guidance of faculty and staff, Praxis fellows conceive, develop, and share a range of digital humanities projects and activities over the course of the year. Praxis aims to prepare fellows with digital methodologies to apply both to the fellowship project and their future research.

AAAS CASE Workshop 2023: Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering

Best suited for: full-time graduate students at UVA in STEM fields who are interested in science policy but have not previously been selected for this opportunity (see eligibility criteria in the link)

This March, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will be hosting its Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) workshop in person in Washington, DC.

The workshop is an exciting opportunity for graduate students to learn about science policy and advocacy. The University of Virginia plans to send a small cohort of graduate students to this entry-level workshop. An internal review process will select the University’s participants.  

Selected students will participate in the 3.5-day program in Washington, DC, to be held March 26-29, 2023. During the workshop, participants will learn about the structure and organization of Congress, the federal budget and appropriations processes, and tools for effective science communication and civic engagement. In addition, students will participate in interactive seminars about policymaking and communication. Registration fees and travel expenses will be covered through the PhD Plus program.
