PhD+ Programs, Opportunities, and Announcements in October 2022

Dear PhD students & Postdocs,

PhD Plus is excited to announce the following series and workshops to support your academic and professional growth in the month of October. In this email, you will find opportunities related to skills development in public writing, data, and consulting, as well as holistic growth through creativity, values, and personal finance. We welcome you to sign up for any opportunities that best align with your professional goals and career interests, and please let us know if you have any questions.

HOLISTIC GROWTH

Foundations: Special Topics

Oct. 12 & Oct. 26 (Wednesdays), 3:30-5 PM | In Person | Registration Link

  • Personal Finance (Oct. 26)  - Registration still OPEN

Living from paycheck to paycheck can add stress to the already complex Graduate School experience. In this workshop, learn the basics of finance management, budgeting, and strategies to manage your expenses within the Graduate Student or Postdoc stipend structure. Use these strategies to develop a financial plan to fit your personal needs towards a balanced life.

  • Values & Your Academic/Professional Journey (Oct. 12)

While it is easy to feel the weight of your checklists, your to-dos, your calendars, it is also critical for us to pause and reflect on what is explicitly and implicitly driving our decisions. What are values exactly? What are your values? How are your values connected to your PhD/Postdoctoral work, your professional and career development, and your personal life? In this session, we will address these questions, and get to know each other from different academic/professional backgrounds, create a learning community for the semester, share and exchange thoughts through small breakout rooms and general discussions, and recharge for the rest of the semester.

Butterflies in my Diaphragm: Writing Workshop for PhD Students

Oct. 18, Tuesday, 2-5 PM, in person | Registration Link | Co-Sponsored by CTE & PhD Plus

In this 3-hour workshop, grounded in the conceptual framework of Embodied Critical Thinking, the facilitators will support graduate students in the development of their writing project by harnessing their implicit, embodied ways of knowing, and by learning ways of trusting oneself and supporting each other in the transformative process of idea generation. The process introduced will be helpful to navigate a variety of typical writing issues that are part and parcel of the creative process and is rarely taught: the inevitable emotional roller coasters that accompany finding one's path in uncharted territory, articulating a profound and personally meaningful research question, getting stuck and unstuck, learning to trust one’s own voice, and cultivating the social support necessary to carry one through.

International Students & Employment Options in the U.S.

Wed., Oct. 12 | 5-6:30pm | More info & registration

Join immigration attorney Mark Rhoads, as well as UVA's Richard Tanson for an overview of the various requirements and options for working in the United States. They'll cover OPT, H-1B visas, additional employment-based visas, and more. This program is open to all UVA students.
