PhD+ Science Policy Lunch Seminar: Strategies for Translating Scientific Research into Public Policy

Biomedical Education Center, McKim Hall

Come to learn from Dr. Shelly Port Smith & Dr. Robyn Diehl McDougle, professors from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) during lunch (provided). This seminar is open to all UVA graduate students and postdocs interested in Science Policy!

How do we use Mason’s Framework for Action as a foundation for leading a policy initiative? How does one coalition build through analysis to create policy? The audience will learn how research can move from the policy formulation phase to policy implementation and finally policy modification. In each case, describing the agenda-setting through the examination of historical context, patterns of impact, resource allocation, evidenced-based solutions, and population health impact will be analyzed for policy implementation. Finally, we will discuss ideas on potential problems that could be addressed by policy initiatives.
