Sizing and Pricing a New Market: Zipcar

Two significant challenges faced by early stage companies—particularly, those launching truly new products—involve understanding (1) how many customers there might be for a novel product  and (2) how many customers their might be for a product that has not previously existed. And so, our discussion will center upon Zipcar in its early days, as the founders tried to anticipate the various components of a business model for the venture: in particular the value proposition and the size of the market for this—at the time—new car service.
