PhD+ AHSS Future Faculty Level 1: Postdoc Experiences and Considerations

This is the third session of Level 1 PhD Plus AHSS Future Faculty series.

It is becoming increasingly common for PhDs in Humanities and Social Sciences to take on Postdoc positions after finishing PhD training. For PhD candidates, some may wonder about whether or not you should pursue a Postdoc position, or how applications for Postdoc positions may differ from a tenure-track position. If you are interested in learning about Postdoc experiences and various considerations, join three panelists who have successfully navigated the postdoc-faculty transition on building your skills, experiences, and relationships intentionally during the Postdoc training time.

Panelists

Kerrigan Mahoney, Ph.D. - Dr. Mahoney is an Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. After earning her PhD in Curriculum and Educational Technology in 2016 from William & Mary, Dr. Mahoney joined UVA's Department of Leadership, Foundations, and Policy as Javits Postdoctoral Research Associate before transitioning to her tenure-track position in 2020. Her research interests are in literacy, technology, multimedia, professional development, and curriculum, instruction and assessment in primary and secondary education, with a focus in academic writing and qualitative research design. Dr. Mahoney has experience in teaching grades 6 - 12, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and research and professional development in K-12.

Julie Jenkins, Ph.D. - Dr. Jenkins is a socio-cultural anthropologist and passionate about working with students to interrogate systems of inequality and explore perspectives that they might not otherwise encounter. Working now as an anthropology instructor at Foothill College, Dr. Jenkins received a Ph.D. from the University of Sussex in Social Anthropology, an MSC from the London School of Economics in Social Anthropology & Development, and a B.A. from DePauw University in Anthropology & Sociology. She has worked for the past nine years at a variety of institutions, including the University of Virginia, Skidmore College, Washington & Lee University, Ball State University, Ivy Tech Community College, and Rutgers University. Her research examines the intersection between West African indigenous religions and transnational flows of ideas and resources centered on human rights and contemporary forms of slavery.

Radomir Ray Mitic, Ph.D. - Dr. Mitic is an Assistant Professor at University of North Dakota. After receiving his Ph.D. in Higher and Postsecondary Education from New York University, Ray joined the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His research explores the civic outcomes of higher education, equity in graduate education, and the internationalization of higher education. His prior experience in higher education includes the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy, the Institute of International Education, the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Office of International Services, and Loyola University Chicago’s John Felice Rome Center.
