ERI: Data and Technology Internship

ORGANIZATION 

The Environmental Resilience Institute supports transdisciplinary research and training at the intersection of environmental change and human well-being by connecting faculty, students, and citizens together to foster a more resilient and sustainable future for the global common good.

PURPOSE 

The intern will learn about program evaluation and performance management systems. Specifically, ERI is building an expert directory for our research community. This entails data collection, curation, and information systems design of our business intelligence and reporting platform. This is a university wide effort with opportunities to learn about technology, university administration, policy and procedures compliance, and project management. 

CAREER DEVELOPMENT 

This internship will prepare interns for careers in any of the following: 

  • Academic Research and Administration 
  • Non-profit 
  • Data science 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT 

This internship will provide experiences to develop and polish the following skills: 

  • Interdisciplinary team collaboration 
  • Problem-solving and analytical thinking 
  • Data literacy and fluency 
  • Project management and leadership 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Duties will include but are not limited to requirements analysis, technology selection, and implementation of and IT solution. Data will be secured and curated for use with the IT solution. The intern will engage with partners to secure their involvement. Work outcomes include data reporting and visualizations supportive of ERI's performance reporting. Other tools may be developed such as tools to build inter and transdisciplinary research capacity at UVA. 

MENTORING PLAN 

The intern will be mentored by ERI's Program Manager who will provide guidance and assistance with data collection, curation, and information systems design of our business intelligence and reporting platform. This is a university wide effort with opportunities to learn about technology, university administration, policy and procedures compliance, and project management. 

DESIRED QUALITIES 

Data science, project management, and IT experience are preferred but not expressly required. Knowledge of performance management and mass communications is helpful. 

DURATION AND EFFORT 

The internship would occur in Summer 2022. 

FUNDING 

PhD+ interns will be paid bi-weekly wages up to $5000 per semester ($25 per hour for 200 hours per semester).
