American Academy of Religion Internship

ORGANIZATION  

As a learned society (guild organization), the mission of the AAR is to foster excellence in the academic understanding of religion and to enhance public understanding of religion.

PURPOSE 

The interns will learn about the many facets of the organization and can expect the following learning outcomes:  

  • Gain experience in project conceptualization, management, and implementation  
  • Understand how to create generative spaces within an organization  
  • Help an organization improve its contributions to the greater good.  
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences  
  • Collaborate across an organization  
  • Experience effective thought leadership 

CAREER DEVELOPMENT 

This internship will prepare interns for careers in any of the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The internship will provide an opportunity for creativity and innovation in helping the organization figure out how to do a proper environmental audit.  The work will involve project conceptualization, management, and implementation.  The intern will complete an initial assessment, gather all available and relevant material, conceive and conduct an environmental audit, and develop recommendations for the organization about how to move forward toward being a more environmentally-responsible organization. 

MENTORING PLAN 

Mentors for this internship will involve the executive director as well as several AAR board members who are focusing on environmental sustainability. Through mentoring, we will help the intern:  

  • Obtain strategic organizational sensibilities  
  • Cultivate networks  
  • Develop nuanced questions  
  • Understand the relationship between mission, values, and goals and implementation processes  
  • Set appropriate professional development goals

DURATION AND EFFORT 

In order to meet the goals outlined above, this internship may span up to two consecutive terms based on the student's availability. 

FUNDING 

PhD+ interns will be paid up to $5000 per semester ($25 per hour for 200 hours per semester).
