Administration & Policy intern: Office of Vice Provost for Administration

ORGANIZATION 

 Vice Provost for Administration, Office of the Vice President & Provost. The provost is responsible for UVA’s teaching, scholarship, and research mission.

PURPOSE

The associate vice provost for academic administration is responsible for a broad array of responsibilities across the provost’s portfolio. Key focus areas include policy, specifically in relation to academic personnel, faculty affairs and faculty data stewardship. The intern will have the opportunity to perform project-based work in a variety of areas depending on the interns qualifications and interest.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

This internship will prepare interns for any of the following careers:

  • Academic and Research administration
  • Advocacy and Policy

RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will have the opportunity to perform project-based work in a variety of areas depending on the intern's qualifications and interest. Specific projects may include doing background research and preliminary analysis in relation to specific policy questions, drafting white papers, as well as helping to design and implement program and/or policy evaluations/assessments. 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

This internship will provide experiences to develop and polish following skills:

  • Interdisciplinary team collaboration,
  • Knowledge of sector and networking,
  • Problem-solving and analytical,
  • Project management and leadership
  • Writing and communications

MENTORING PLAN

Maggie Peña Harden will mentor the intern. Specific goals will be created in partnership with the intern.
Regardless of the specific goals and responsibilities, anticipated outcomes include:

  • understanding the breadth of the provost's portfolio, the composition of the office and subsidiary units, and the work that is required of academic administrators within an environment like UVA
  • experience applying one's research, writing and communication skills to real-life contexts outside of one's discipline

DURATION AND EFFORT

This internship is for the 2021-2022 academic year (Fall 2021 and Spring 2022). Individuals who are interested and able to start during the 2021 Summer are also encouraged to apply. Typical weekly effort is 10 hours in academic semester and 20 hours in summer period.

FUNDING 

$25 per hour in wages for up to 200 hours per semester.
