UVA Global Affairs: Communications and Program Coordinator Intern

ORGANIZATION

UVA Global Affairs advances global outreach to prepare students, the University, and the Commonwealth to thrive in an interconnected world—through study abroad, globally-oriented curriculum and programming on Grounds, and expanded international research opportunities. Global Affairs is fostering global research and engagements; collaborating with global education units to build a continuum of educational offerings; and developing a wide array of services, programs, experiences, and strategic partnerships that promote global imagination within the university community.

PURPOSE

UVA Global is committed to increasing UVA’s global profile and building a global community at UVA through global curriculum, communications, and programming on Grounds. The Communications and Program Coordinator intern will provide administrative, programmatic, project management and communications support for a variety of Global Affairs projects and programs to help Global Affairs fulfil its mission.

The intern will have a chance to interact with Vice Provost for Global Affairs Ambassador Steve Mull, Global Communications Officer Mandira Banerjee and with Directors of other units under Global Affairs as well as internal and external audiences.

Ambassador Mull worked in the U.S. Department of State for 36 years in a broad range of U.S. national security positions before joining University of Virginia. He was the Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs working as the day-to-day manager of overall regional and bilateral policy issues, and overseeing the bureaus for Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, the Near East, South and Central Asia, the Western Hemisphere, and International Organizations. He also served as the Lead Coordinator for Iran Nuclear Implementation where he led U.S. government interagency efforts and diplomacy to implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The intern will assist the Global Communications Officer and the Global Affairs Office in a variety of administrative and outreach responsibilities:

    • Communicating to diverse audiences; writing stories for newsletter, website, managing social media.
    • Planning and organizing workshops and other events some in partnership with other internal and external office
    • Prepare project reports for the various programs and projects
    • Creating and maintaining databases and listservs
    • Project management and leadership

    MENTORING PLAN

    The intern will receive direct mentoring and supervision in the Vice Provost for Global Affairs office and will have a chance to interact and attend meetings, get direct feedback on their work from UVA’s Vice Provost for Global Affairs Ambassador Steve Mull. They will also be supervised by Global Communications Officer Mandira Banerjee and have a chance to interact with Directors of other units under Global Affairs.

    • Organizational skills, ability to multi-task and attention to detail are required.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving, and decision-making skills.  
    • Design skills -- basic training and familiarity with design software like Photoshop, Canva, Illustrator is a plus.
    • Time management skills
    • Knowledge of and/or interest in website maintenance, newsletter production
    • Conversant with social media trends on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, etc.

    DURATION AND EFFORT

    The internship will start in Summer 2021 and continue through Fall 2021. During the academic year, the internship would be an average of 10hours/week. There may be an occasional intensive week or so, but we would plan in advance and make adjustments in prior or subsequent weeks.

    FUNDING 

    The internship provides up to $5000 in wages per semester.
