What is a Lightning Talk & How Do I Get Started? | March 28, 3:00-4:00 pm (virtual)

The UVA Postdoc Symposium provides postdocs from all disciplines an opportunity to effectively explain their research in a five-minute lightning talk, in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience. This year, the Lightning Talks will be held as a competition with cash prizes (up to $1,000) for the top three Lightning Talks and a People’s Choice award. To select the 7 postdocs who will present in the featured session during the Postdoc Symposium, we will hold a preliminary selection round the week of April 22.

This 60-minute workshop will provide an overview of the Lightning Talk competition rules and expectations, including time for you to ask any questions you might have about participating. We will go over judging criteria (same for both rounds) and the competition structure (preliminary and final rounds), break down some videos of similar presentations and give you practical steps to get started preparing your talk. After participating, attendees will know more about their audience, understand the presentation format and requirements, and have a timeline for developing their talk.
