PhD+ Foundations: Agency and Agility

New Cabell Hall 349 (French Conference Room)

The unpredictability and risks associated with research can often derail best-laid plans, slow progress, and therefore, cause stress and anxiety in graduate students and Postdocs. Following the session on Project Management, identify risks that can impact your training goals and build some strategies to develop agility to manage risks.

Furthermore, most graduate students and Postdocs feel a lack of agency and control over their training experience. At this session, we will understand the structural and environmental factors that may lead to feelings of powerlessness, and discuss how to take control of your training experience and career. One factor is fear of conflicts in a system with power-differentials. Most scientists and scholars are wary of "people problems" and find themselves ill-equipped to resolve conflicts. therefore to aid in agency, understand how conflicts may arise, reflect on your conflict management style and learn about effective ways to communicate through conflict.
