MENTORING PLAN

The intern will have 1-3 meetings per week with the direct supervisor for guidance on the project, feedback and collaboration. In addition, s/he will have a 1:1 with the chief scientist every other week to check in on how the work is going and how the project-focused collaborative team is functioning. In addition, the intern will attend weekly meetings with the entire forest carbon team. S/he will have the opportunity to attend bi-weekly meetings with the research and analytics team and weekly meetings with the product update team; these fora will provide insight into the way the company works across all areas of the carbon market (nature-based and technology based offsets) and the day-to-day process of getting our products (carbon offset ratings) before our customers.

The intern will also be invited to attend webinars (on aspects of the voluntary carbon market) on behalf of the company. S/he will be part of an all-company slack communications network with access to formal and informal company communications. S/he will be encouraged to join linked in and follow our company and notable carbon market stakeholders on linked in. S/he will also have an opportunity to work with our communications team to craft and promote a blog for the voluntary carbon market.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The intern will learn about the voluntary carbon market with a particular focus on nature-based solutions. The intern will also learn about how scientific knowledge can be translated into a product that has value for investors as well as for customers, people in developing nations and a warming planet. S/he will apply geospatial skills to a large database to create knowledge that will be useful in assessing the integrity of forest based carbon offsets. In so doing, s/he will build on existing skills in GIS, data analysis and potentially coding in python or other languages. S/he will learn how to work at the more rapid pace of the business world, how to meet deadlines, seek help early, check in regularly, accept and incorporate feedback, and work as part of a company rather than just as part of a research group.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary goal of the intern will be to analyze geospatial biomass data for approximately 70 REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) projects in tropical forests around the world. For each project, we will determine emission factors associated with forest loss (tons of biomass per hectare). This data will allow us to independently assess the projects' claims surrounding emissions from deforestation. The intern will use GIS
