UVA | Northern Virginia Business Development Internship

ORGANIZATION 

The mission of UVA | Northern Virginia is to expand the offerings of UVA schools in Northern Virginia. These can certainly involve degree programs but could also include non-degree education and programs.

PURPOSE 

These interns will work closely with the business development team of a new unit at UVA. They will be directly linked to understanding and attempting to assist in all aspects of the expansion of UVA into Northern Virginia. The involvement of PhDs in this process can be quite informative, from a subject-matter-expertise standpoint.  

CAREER DEVELOPMENT 

This internship will prepare interns for careers in any of the following: 

  • Industry and For-profit 
  • Academic Research and Administration 
  • Communication, Outreach, and Publishing 
  • Regulatory affairs, Marketing and Sales 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT 

This internship will provide experiences to develop and polish the following skills: 

  • Data literacy and fluency 
  • Project management and leadership 
  • Grant writing and funding development 
  • Marketing 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The tasks will be to assist in analyzing market data, compiling external data about potential market targets, attending sales visits and transcribing follow-up materials, helping to prepare informational and pitch decks, etc. The more interpersonal aspects - visiting the clients - will also play a role, though they will be less frequent. Additionally, there will be work that will involve qualitative and quantitative analysis. 

MENTORING PLAN 

The interns will work primarily with the business development team in analytical presentation and archival tasks. Members of that team will be available for support and feedback. The interns will also be mentored by Greg Fairchild and Julia Floyd throughout the duration of the internship.  

DESIRED QUALITIES 

For those interested in this position, facility with analyzing and presenting quantitative data will be important. Online and library research skills are also desirable. 

DURATION AND EFFORT 

The internship will occur during the Summer 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters. 

FUNDING 

PhD+ interns will be paid up to $5000 per semester ($25 per hour for 200 hours per semester).
