International PhD Career Development Bootcamp

PhD Plus International PhD Career Development Bootcamp comprises 5 interactive sessions. Starting on June 7th and concluding on June 11th of 2021, we will kick off this summer with a 90-minutes session each day to tackle topics commonly faced by PhD candidates and Postdocs with an international background. This series is best suited for PhD students in their candidacy, and Postdoctoral Scholars at all stages of training.

This Bootcamp is intentionally designed to focus on providing strategies of career preparation for international PhD candidates and Postdocs in the United States, including applicable career strategies for global mobility. While there are many critical aspects, we want to offer a framework and create a community of support and accountability.

LEARNING GOALS

  • Understand job markets for international PhDs and competencies needed in the workplace;
  • Gain self-knowledge on individual interests, skills, and values to pursue meaningful career pathways;
  • Create SMART goals to strategically prepare for career development, informed by external (e.g., immigration rules & policies) and internal knowledge (i.e., what best excites you and brings meaning to you);
  • Learn to communicate strengths and acknowledge common mental challenges to international PhD-level job candidates;
  • Build a community of international peers, mentors, and advocates for professional and personal support;
  • Obtain tacit knowledge on how to network, job search, and interview, and practice putting an application together.
