Science Advocacy Workshop: Mini CASE

Commonwealth Room, Newcomb Hall

The CASE (Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering) workshop is successful program hosted by AAAS, which brings together graduate students from universities across the country to Washington, D.C. Students selected by these institutions spend three days learning about the structure and organization of Congress, the federal budget and appropriations process, and tools for effective science communication and civic engagement. They hear from science policy practitioners, federal research agencies, members of congress and staff, and former CASE attendees. At the conclusion, the students visit with their respective members of congress and communicate to policymakers on the importance of federal investments in science and engineering using their own research to tell the story.

Representatives from AAAS are traveling to UVA to conduct a mini-CASE workshop with our students. However, this workshop will have more of a focus on state and local government, rather than federal government. This will provide students with valuable training about federal and state budget processes and how to effectively communicate and tailor messages when interacting with elected officials.
