Startup Valuation

One of the more difficult exercises to wrap our heads around can be the challenge of putting a specific price upon a startup company—particularly those ventures that are so early in their lifecycle that they are not yet earning revenue.

To provide context for the valuation challenge, note that the public markets—stock exchanges—provide very clear and up-to-the-minute windows into the valuation of publicly traded companies. Yet, even within these markets people disagree on the “true” value of any company, leading to constantly shifting valuations.

And so, today’s session will involve an overview of the variety of techniques that have been applied to make sense of and justify startup valuation, as well as a couple exercises through which we try to construct valuations.
