PhD+ Entrepreneurship: Staging Innovation

Nau Hall, Room 142

Entrepreneurship seminars are a mix of case discussions, guest panels, and action-oriented workshops covering topics such as: founders agreements, incorporation, market analysis, product development, funding and deal terms, business models, investor presentations, etc.

Staging Innovation - Kleiner Perkins and Genentech

Today, we are going to try to gain a better understanding of how investors (and founders) “tease out” the risk/uncertainties in early-stage ventures via a series of staged investments—each stage targeting a particular risk/uncertainty facing the venture.

Furthermore, we will dive into the more direct set of nuts and bolts involved in the capitalization of a new company, and the representation of any series of investments in what's called a "capitalization table."

Our anchor for the discussion will be the early days of Genentech, and the initial investments made in the company by Kleiner Perkins.
