Weldon Cooper: Demographic Research Internship

ORGANIZATION 

The Demographics Research Group at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service delivers public impact research and multi-sector leadership developments to build the capacity of Virginia's communities, organizations, and institutions to serve the Commonwealth.

PURPOSE 

The PhD+ intern will participate in analyzing the 2020 Census data for the Commonwealth of Virginia and in writing the census briefs for the general public.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The intern will:

  • Attend the group's staff meetings and research team meetings.
  • Assist in conducting data analysis of the 2020 Census.
  • Assist in writing research reports/briefs/blog posts in a concise and accessible way. 

MENTORING PLAN 

Shonei Sen and Hamilton Lombard, two senior research staff members in the group, will mentor the intern. The goals are:

  • To engage the intern with meaningful work and hands-on learning,
  • To provide knowledgable feedback and advice
  • To help enhance the group's capacity and capability through the intern's contribution.  

DESIRED QUALITIES 

We recommend PhD students with the following interests and experiences to apply: 

  • Data analytical skills, with proficiency in STATA, R, SAS, or other data programming softwares 
  • Interest in analyzing the new Census 2020 data 
  • GIS or other data visualization skills 
  • Writing skills for lay audience 

DURATION AND EFFORT 

This internship will commence in Spring of 2023. Typical efforts involved is 10 hours/week for 20 weeks in Spring semester. Upon mutual interest, this internship could be extended to Summer 2023. 

FUNDING 

PhD+ interns will be paid bi-weekly wages up to $5000 per semester ($25 per hour for 200 hours per semester).
