The Demographics Research Group at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service delivers public impact research and multi-sector leadership developments to build the capacity of Virginia's communities, organizations, and institutions to serve the Commonwealth.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
This internship will prepare interns for careers in any of the following:
- Data Science
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
This internship will provide experiences to develop and polish the following skills:
- Problem-solving and Analytical Thinking
MENTORING PLAN
- Intern will be assigned to project teams
- Instruction and feedback will be provided on a regular basis
- Intern will join the staff meeting once a month and project team meetings
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The intern will..
- Experience working with different government agencies to obtain administrative data.
- Experience in working with real data, which are often imperfect and require careful cleaning.
- Have opportunity to create data visualization using Tableau or other software.
- Become more familiar with Census and other demographic data.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Intern will perform some of the following duties, depending on their interest and skill level:
- Collecting building permits, group quarter population (prisons, college dorms, etc.), and school enrollment data
- Checking data consistency and completeness, and cleaning data.
- Using GIS, geo-coding births and deaths data
- Creating data visualization dashboard for a sponsored project on aging
- Analyzing the 2020 Census data
- Contributing to research blog (www.statchatva.org)
DESIRED QUALITIES
Intern should have at least one of the following technical skills:
- Data analysis using a statistics package, such as R or STATA;
- GIS for mapping and geocoding;
- Data visualization using Tableau.
