Description: One of the difficulties in discussing controversial subjects includes preparing and facilitating discussion for undergraduate students who come into the classroom with varying levels of openness or preparedness to discuss such topics. This workshop will address how to “set the tone” and consistently cultivate an environment in which students are held accountable to being reflexive and respectful active learners. This interactive workshop will prepare participants for engaging undergraduate students in discussing potentially controversial topics, diffusing heated debate, and being mindful of verbal and non-verbal cues that signify students’ sensitivities to various course topics.
