Preparing Students for Controversial Topics Early in the Semester

Nau Hall 342

Description: The first few meetings of a course are crucial for setting a tone and creating a space that will determine how students navigate controversial topics together. How can instructors best frame the classroom environment to foster thoughtful and productive student engagement around difficult subjects? This workshop provides methods for successfully framing courses that feature controversial topics. Participants will discuss and engage with concrete strategies for setting ground rules as a classroom community; modeling empathetic engagement with multiple perspectives; and reflexively combining personal emotional responses to topics with the critical thinking required of humanities and social science coursework.
