PhD+ Faculty Job Search Series: Reflective Teaching Statements

Commonwealth Room, Newcomb Hall

Developed in collaboration with the UVA Dual Career Program.

This interactive series is designed for UVA Graduate Students and Postdocs and UVA Dual Career Program participants who are exploring postdoctoral opportunities and faculty careers in the next two years. You will learn where faculty positions post, how to prepare effective application materials, and interview and negotiation strategies, and will  hear perspectives of several faculty who have served on hiring committees and successfully negotiated the faculty search process themselves.

In this session, you will learn how to write a reflective teaching statement (also known as a teaching philosophy statement). You’ll explore the various components of a teaching statement, evaluate sample statements from a variety of disciplines, and be introduced to a rubric for evaluating teaching statements that is based on search committee expectations. You’ll also have a chance to reflect on your own teaching philosophy and practices, and consider how you wish to communicate these in writing.
