Description: Graduate students in STEM fields often encounter both formal and informal mentoring experiences through managing undergraduate students in the lab or overseeing undergraduate research projects, but they lack formal training to perform this role. This workshop will discuss empirical best strategies to establish a prolific mentor-mentee relationship, including scientific teaching, communication of personal goals and expectations, feedback and evaluations, resolving challenges, and inclusivity. In this interactive workshop, attendees will have an opportunity to share their past mentoring experiences and explore their personal mentoring philosophy and approach. We also investigate how the mentoring experience can boost graduate students’ success in post-graduation research and education.
