Description: The STEM college student population in the US is becoming increasingly more diverse. How do students’ diverse backgrounds influence their motivation and attitudes about science? Can instructors positively impact student motivation in STEM fields? This workshop aims to answer these tough questions and provide empirically tested techniques to enhance motivation among diverse sets of learners in science, such as international students, students with disabilities, and non-science majors. At the conclusion of this workshop, you will be able to: 1) Describe how diverse backgrounds influence motivation, 2) Practice representing concepts in multiple ways to boost engagement, 3) Analyze your own teaching style to determine if your style promotes motivation among diverse students.
