The Environment Extern Program

The Environment Resilience Institute, in conjunction with PhD Plus and the UVA Career Center, is offering the Environment Extern Program. This opportunity is intended for Graduate Students across all disciplines, from Arts and Humanities to Science and Engineering.

The Environment Extern program is a job-shadowing opportunity designed to match students with workplace mentors and provide professional insights about translating their graduate experience and transferable skills into careers and partnerships related to resilience and sustainability. The program runs one week during upcoming J-term (January 2-12, 2019).  Funding, including travel, lodging and up to $100 incidental expenses (but not food costs or stipend) are provided.

The Environmental Externship Program represents an initial offering towards the larger goal of providing Graduate Students experiential training in diverse careers through PhD+ internship opportunities.  We anticipate that additional internship experiences for summer 2019 and beyond will be announced early this spring.

Application guidelines

Your application will be screened before you are eligible for interviews. To optimize your experience and accommodate diverse students’ needs, we require that each student only apply to a maximum of two host organizations listed.

Your application must include a resume and statement expressing interest in sustainability and related careers. At the completion of externship, we require students to submit a 1-page reflection essay, and may ask that program participants share their experiences with other students.
