Speaker Bio

Mr. Peter Sowden began working in academic publishing in the autumn of 1976 after completing his undergraduate degree in history at Balliol College, Oxford.  His first job was at Croom Helm, at the time, a pioneer in publishing social history.  After working in marketing for a year he became a commissioning editor in the social sciences, commissioning books in economics, business, politics and international relations, geography and teacher education.  In late 1987 when Croom Helm merged with three other imprints to establish Routledge in its present form as an academic-only publisher, Mr. Sowden became an editorial director, supervising editors in these same subjects and also overseeing Routledge’s journals publishing.  In 1992 he became publishing director, responsible for all Routledge publishing done from London.  In 1998 following Taylor and Francis’s acquisition of Routledge he became a post-corporate freelance commissioning editor, commissioning in Asian, Russian and East European studies for Curzon Press, itself also taken over by Taylor and Francis in 2001. He also worked in early modern and modern history for Boydell and Brewer.  His post-corporate freelance commissioning work continues in 2018 with about 65 books a year published for Routledge and about 10-12 a year for Boydell and Brewer.
