In 2022, Jocelyn Frelier, PhD, left her faculty role in French for a career in non-profit. The responses she got from colleagues when she made the announcement signaled that many feel unsatisfied in their academic careers, but are either unsure of how to leave or fear “starting over” in a new field. In this lunch discussion, you’ll get to hear Dr. Frelier’s story and how she got past many of those common hesitations to leave academia. You’ll learn what it’s like working in a non-profit and how you can make academic and public-facing scholarship a meaningful part of your life in any profession.

In the workshop portion of this event, get some practical advice on how to engage in public scholarship as a grad student and prompts to start thinking about how your research can translate to other contexts.

Graduate students in the humanities are welcome to join all or part of the event. If you wish to join us for (free!) lunch, please indicate so while registering so we know how much food to order, or feel free to bring your own.

This event is hosted by PhD+ in the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. Dr. Frelier’s visit is sponsored by the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center, the University of Virginia Library, and PhD+. Please consider attending the other events during Dr. Frelier’s visit:
